Negotiations on the closure of Sanoma Manu have concluded – the printing plant will be closed by the end of the year

In September, Sanoma Media Finland announced its plan to centralize news media printing operations at the Sanomala printing plant and close the Sanoma Manu printing plant in Tampere. The goal of the plan is to ensure a sustainable lifecycle for printed newspapers as far into the future as possible and to support the vitality of local and regional journalism. With the decline in the volume of printed newspapers, it is possible to print Sanoma's publications at a single printing plant.

The negotiations concerning the plan have now concluded. As a result of the negotiations, Sanoma will close the Sanoma Manu printing plant. The closure will result in the termination of 65 employment contracts at Sanoma Manu. For those affected by the negotiations, four permanent positions and 7–12 temporary positions within the company are available.

“Sanoma Manu is one of the most modern printing plants in Finland, and it has a highly skilled workforce. The decision to close it was difficult. However, this allows us to strengthen local journalism and extend the lifecycle of printed newspapers. We are now striving to support the staff in every possible way and individually in their relocation”, says Petteri Putkiranta, Head of News and Feature Business at Sanoma Media Finland.

The change in the printing location will not affect the delivery schedule of Aamulehti or Satakunnan Kansa, and the newspapers will be delivered to subscribers on the same schedule as before. The decision also does not affect the news brands. The editorial offices in Pirkanmaa and Satakunta will continue in their current locations.

“However, the change will affect the printing deadline of Aamulehti and Satakunnan Kansa, which will be moved up slightly. This means that some late-night news will be left out of the printed newspaper", says Sanna Keskinen, Editor-in-Chief of Aamulehti.

"Late-night news and sports will be available in the updated version of the e-paper and the online news feed. Our work to develop local and regional journalism continues, and we are currently recruiting new journalists. We also want to help readers discover our diverse digital content, and we are organizing assistance for readers in adopting digital services”, says Keskinen.
