Inspiration to read

Newspapers and magazines engage in active co-operation with educational institutions by, for example, aiming to improve the media literacy of young people and encourage children and young people to read.

Each year, Finnish newspaper publishers organise a joint project, Newspaper Week, and magazine publishers have a Magazine Day in schools. During these theme events, publishers provide schools with materials for classroom sessions. In addition, journalists visit schools to talk about their work, and Helsingin Sanomat publishes special articles for pupils each day.

Piste is an editorial training office located in Sanomatalo, Helsinki. It was launched in 1999 and is run jointly by Helsingin Sanomat, Ilta-Sanomat and Taloussanomat. At Piste, pupils from the upper levels of comprehensive school can learn about the different stages of preparing a newspaper article. About 10,000 children and teenagers visit Piste each year.

Time saving, simple and motivating online learning

The Belgian online learning service Bingel.be (developed by Van In, a Sanoma company) enhances the learning activity of primary school pupils. The key benefits of the service come from time savings of the teachers’ precious time, simplicity of usage for digitally less experienced teachers, and increased learning motivation for the students.

The teachers may customize exercises according to the age and skill level of the pupils, and as pupils become more skilled, the exercises are automatically updated to set forth new learning challenges. On the other hand, the service also recognizes if exercises are too demanding and decreases the level of difficulty accordingly. The online user interface is made visually attractive, and gaming attributes further increase the motivation for children to use the service – part of the learning process is turned into playing.

When teachers have more time to use for the actual teaching process and giving individual attention to pupils, schooling becomes more efficient and effective. Motivated learners with proper attention achieve good results.
