Sanoma wants to be a good corporate citizen. We are responsible to our employees, customers, investors and other stakeholders for the consequences of our actions. Our goal is to be one of the leading media companies in Europe, with a focus on sustainable growth and profitability.
As a media company, we have an important role in fostering freedom of expression and creativity. A responsible attitude towards society forms an integral part of the Group's general business principles. The Group has worked for the benefit of society for a long time, promoting both mental and economic well-being.
The Group's long-term success can only be secured by economically, environmentally, and socially responsible operations.
In autumn 2010, a wide-ranging materiality assessment of Sanoma’s corporate responsibility was carried out together with our personnel and customers, investors, partners and peers. In the assessment we asked their views on Sanoma’s corporate responsibility and the issues we should focus on. Targeted and open surveys, management interviews and review of the media sector’s responsibility issues gave us valuable and fresh viewpoints.
The two most important aspects for our stakeholders are freedom of speech and editorial integrity. Altogether about 200 people took part in the review, conducted together with corporate responsibility experts. The results of the materiality assessment are shown below.
The results indicate that in media and learning, our strategic focus areas, it is especially important to act responsibly, every day and in all businesses.
The assessment helps us at Sanoma to understand what Sanoma people and stakeholders expect from us and how to develop our actions accordingly.
"Responsibility for society in economic, environmental and social issues forms an integral part of the Group's operating principles and has helped Sanoma's businesses achieve long-term success."
