Printing plants

Production processes

The Group's eight printing plants are all located in Finland:

  • Five newspaper rotary units (Vantaa, Forssa, Varkaus, Kouvola, Lappeenranta)
  • Two book printing units (Porvoo, Juva)
  • A point-of-sale marketing material printing unit (Jyväskylä)

In other operating countries, printing is outsourced.

Sanoma's printing facilities develop constantly their practices and production processes, because quality operations with small environmental impacts and little disturbances are also the most profitable and efficient operations.

In June 2010, Sanomapaino received certification of its quality management system (ISO 9001), environmental management system (ISO 14001), and occupational health & safety management system (OHSAS 18001). The certification comprises all five printing houses as well as Sanomapaino's sales, administration, and materials service.

The Group's printing plants assume that also their suppliers apply in their operations methods which reduce environmental load.

Waste sorting and recycling

Sanoma's environmental principles include the sorting of waste in their original location and recycling the waste as efficiently as possible. For example, the printing plates used in the printing facilities and the waste paper from printing process is sorted and recycled as industry raw material.

In 2006, common waste management principles were prepared for the Group's printing plants. The key objective of these principles is to reduce waste generation which, in turn, reduces environmental load and waste management costs.
